Administered Under the Annual Scholarship Grant Program
AHLA Foundation Hospitality 2000 Scholarship - In 1996, the Foundation launched a capital giving campaign entitled "Hospitality 2000," which raised $6.7 million from the industry. A portion of these funds were earmarked for scholarships. Since 2002, the fund has awarded $238,500 to 170 students.
AHLA Foundation New Century Scholarship - In 2001 the Foundation launched another capital giving campaign entitled "New Century" which raised $9.3 million from the industry. A portion of those funds were earmarked for scholarships. To-date $214,000 has been awarded to 99 students through the Incoming Freshman scholarship.
American Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) Scholarship - ALIS has allocated a generous portion of its revenues to benefit the educational, research,and training missions of the Foundation. ALIS funds are allocated to the Annual Scholarship Grant Program as well as the Incoming Freshman program. Since 2002, ALIS scholarships totaling $1910,500 have been awarded to 1,207 students.
Melinda Bush Scholarship - Created in 2006, this fund benefits students attending the University of Denver. In addition to the monetary award, Melinda also offers to be a mentor to the student recipients. To date, 14 scholarships have been awarded totaling $37,000.
John Clifford Memorial Scholarship - In the early 1980s, the Palm Beach County Hotel & Lodging Association established this scholarship in memory of John F. Clifford. To date, the endowment fund has awarded $57,000 in scholarships to 61 students.
Cecil B. Day Memorial Scholarship - In 1981, a scholarship endowment fund was established in memory of Cecil B. Day from the Cecil B. Day Investment Company with a $500,000 contribution. To date, more than $954,500 in scholarships has been awarded to 801 students.
The Handlery Scholarship - Paul Handlery, the AHLA Foundation's Honorary Chairman for Life, established this endowment fund in 1982. The fund benefits students attending California State Polytechnic University - Pomona, City College of San Francisco, Cornell University, and the University of San Francisco. Since 1989, $485,000 has been distributed to 323 students.
Hilton Worldwide Scholarship - In 2011, Hilton Worldwide pledged a gift of $100,000 to be paid from 2012-2015. A total of 72 were awarded the scholarship.
Conrad N. Hilton Memorial Scholarship - The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation created this memorial endowment with a $500,000 gift in 1995. Today, the fund has awarded $692,000 in scholarships to 583 students.
Creighton Holden Memorial Scholarship Fund - In 2005, an endowment fund was established in the memory of Creighton Holden, AHLA past chairman and volunteer. The scholarship benefits the students attending Michigan State University. To date, $12,750 has been awarded to 13 students.
Hospitality Asset Managers Association Scholarship - Created in 2013 with a donation of $50,000, this scholarship is intended to benefit students attending a school with an asset management program. To date $7,500 has been awarded to 5 students.
Steve Hymans Extended Stay Scholarship - Established by the AHLA Extended Stay Council to educate students about the extended stay segment, this endowment fund was renamed in memory of Steven Hymans. To date, the fund has awarded $76,750 to 42 students. Currently, the scholarships benefit students attending Steve's alma mater, Michigan State University.
Richard Kessler Scholarship - In 1985, Kessler Enterprise created this endowment fund to support students attending the University of Central Florida. Today, the fund has awarded $51,325 in scholarships to 46 students.
J. Willard Marriott Memorial Scholarship - In 1989, the J. Willard Marriott Foundation established this endowment fund with a donation of $250,000. To date, the fund has disbursed $426,000 to 306 students.
Joseph McInerney Scholarship - In 2013, Joe's colleagues and friends throughout the industry donated $154,500 to permanently endow a scholarship in his honor. To date $24,000 has been awarded to 17 students.
Curtis C. Nelson Scholarship - The Carlson family established this fund with a $100,000 endowment to benefit students attending Cornell University. To date, $76,000 has been distributed to 32 students.
Administered as Separate Scholarship Programs
American Express Scholarship - Founded in 1994 with the creation of an endowed fund, this program is designed specifically for hotel current employees and their dependents. It offers academic and professional development scholarships. Since its inception, $406,00 has been awarded to 344 students and professionals.
Ecolab Scholarship - Established in 1996, Ecolab made a long-term commitment to fund academic scholarships as well as professional development scholarships for hotel employees. To date, the fund has awarded more than $429,000 to 289 students and professionals. Ecolab continues to fund the program on an annual basis.
Hyatt Hotels Fund for Minority Lodging Management Students - Founded in 1988 to honor the brightest minority students in hospitality, the program has awarded $786,000 to 393 students.
Karl Mehlmann Scholarship - In 1978, the Colorado/Wyoming Hotel & Motel Association established this endowment fund. Since its inception, $201,000 has been awarded to 169 students.
Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship - An endowment fund was established in 1974 in memory of Arthur J. Packard. The Packard competition recognizes the most outstanding student of lodging management and two runner-ups through a national competition. Since 1974, more than $300,000 has been awarded to 95 students.
PepsiCo. Foundation Scholarship - In 2002, the PepsiCo Foundation created this endowment fund to benefit graduating seniors from the Hospitality High School in Washington, D.C. To date, $151,000 has been awarded to 62 students. Since the high school closed in 2015, the PepsiCo Foundation Scholarships will be awarded though the AHLA Foundation's Incoming Freshman Scholarship Program.
Rama Scholarship for the American Dream Scholarship - The Rama brothers, principals of JHM Hotels, Inc., established the scholarship program with a $1,000,001 endowment gift. Since its inception in 1998, the fund has awarded $817,000 to 492 students.
